The Department of Community-based Rehabilitation Sciences is concerned with prevention and rehabilitation of disability and health issues of those living with disabilities and other disadvantageous conditions from the perspective of nursing and public health, as an issue that overrides community and national boundaries. We are also involved in fieldwork in under-resourced regions and countries and interdisciplinary research activities. In the field of rehabilitation sciences, we conduct research on various factors which trigger decline in human functions from physical, psychological and social perspectives, and seek to develop support programs for those in need. We especially focus on support to promote social participation of those living with disabilities, using the methods of occupational therapy. In the field of nursing, we conduct research on various conditions to achieving and sustaining healthy life, including factors related to geographical and living environment, socio-economic factors, factors related to lifestyle, culture and social values, and ways of offering life support to individuals and families, and of approaching the community. In the field of public health, we focus on various health issues in different regions and their associations with diseases and disabilities, and develop health promotion programmes which are community-specific.

Through Center for International Collaborative Research, Nagasaki University, we are involved in many collaborative works with WHO, JICA and other national and international organizations. We have also established bases in Kenya and Vietnam for conducting overseas research and education, through which we promote internationalization of education and research. Our postgraduate courses also utilize these fieldworks, and the benefits of the fieldworks are expected to expand to research and education in public health, rehabilitation and other fields. We very much believe that through research and education activities in the overseas fields, we can contribute to improving the health of the people of the world. |
