'The Mental Health Status of the Family of Type 2 Diabetes Patients'

The qualitative and quantitative data was obtained from 12 family members of type 2 diabetes patients. Those family members who can speak directly about their wishes to the patients are less likely to suffer from ill-mental health, while those who were too considerate of the patients were likely to suffer from ill-mental health. The study also indicated that the families of the patients with chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, take on multiple roles in their family, such as nutritionist, psychological supporter, and domestic worker. The uniqueness of this study is to focus on the mental health of the family of the chronic patients. Studies with such a scope are rare in Japan. It also indicated that to consider not only patients of type 2 diabetes but also their families is essential to develop a proper nursing assessment.

'A Cross-Sectional Study of the Satisfaction for Medical Facilities in the Gotoh Islands'

This quantitative survey was conducted with the office workers on the Gotoh Islands, an isolated chain of islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. A total of 248 respondents answered the questionnaire, and 'doctors are not mature and less-skilled' and 'doctors are often transferred' were identified as points of dissatisfaction regarding the medical facilities on the Gotoh Islands. On isolated islands in Japan, the health workforce is dependent on young and less experienced medical doctors who stay temporarily on the islands. To establish a highly qualified and stable workforce is essential, especially in an isolated island situation.

'A Study of Elderly Residents in the T Housing Complex and an Informal Service Provided by the Residents: An Analysis of ‘SUKETTO-TAI’ '

The purpose of this study was to identify the present conditions relevant to the current and future use of ‘SUKETTO-TAI; a voluntary informal service group in the T housing complex of Nagasaki City.  A six-page questionnaire was developed and distributed to the residents older than 60 years of age living in the T housing complex. The questionnaire categories included basic demographics, life stressors, social capital, social support and a morale scale. The responses were analyzed to determine the level of recognition of ‘SUKETTO-TAI’ and to evaluate the current and potential future use of ‘SUKETTO-TAI.’
The findings of a statistical analysis with 156 respondents indicated that 86% recognized ‘SUKETTO-TAI’, 11% used it, and 64% will use it in the future. The needs of ‘SUKETTO-TAI’ will be increased in the near future as aging population in T housing complex increases.
The data also suggested that ‘SUKETTO-TAI’ is used not only by people who are rich in social capital, but also by people who are anxious about human relationships in the community. It can be assumed that ‘SUKETTO-TAI’ plays a relatively neutral role in the T housing complex by providing informal services for people who are likely to be isolated.
